Throughout Hearing Health Awareness Month, we’ve been showing you why early testing and treatments can make a huge difference to a person’s life.
It’s been amazing to see how people across East Texas have helped the campaign reach different communities through word of mouth.
Now and in the future, we are determined to assist as many local people as possible.
Our charity organization, the Marquardt Hearing Foundation, Inc., is perhaps the best example of how we help others to achieve better hearing, irrespective of their circumstances.
A fund for working people
I co-founded the foundation with my wife roughly ten years ago.
Our aim was to give back to people in the community who might not be able to afford hearing care due to their personal circumstances.
The inspiration for the foundation came from my own family experiences.
My father was a preacher, and my mother was a teacher. Both worked their whole lives. But later, when they needed hearing aids, the financing was beyond their means.
This isn’t a unique story in America.
And while more and more insurance companies are today covering the costs of treatment, it felt important to help out, if we could, as a company.
The start of a legacy
The foundation has allowed us to support the hearing care needs of many hundreds of local patients over the years.
In many ways, this has been some of the most enjoyable work that the team and I have undertaken during our careers.
Often, we’ll see five or six patients who are assisted by the foundation each month, and helping them get the right attention and treatment is a joy to behold.
One of the main reasons for this is we know the long-term health and emotional issues that can arise from a hearing loss.
Many people with untreated conditions slowly withdraw from society, as social interaction becomes more difficult. Researchers have also linked hearing loss to an increased risk of dementia, especially in older patients.
Hopes for the future
Throughout its history, the foundation has given away over $100,000 in hearing aid treatments, and the team has provided countless hours of counseling and support to patients.
We know it has changed lives, and that’s a fantastic feeling. But we also know that with extra funds, we can help so many more people.
