What To Expect At A Vestibular Test

#1 – Come To The Clinic At Least 15 Minutes Before Your Appointment

It’s important to check-in with staff before the start of your assessment. If you arrive too close to the scheduled time, it may have to be re-arranged.

Please, do not wear mascara, eyeliner, or face lotions to the clinic, as these can interfere with the tests. Similarly, do not drink alcohol 24 hours prior to your appointment.

The assessment will take roughly 60 minutes to complete.

#2 – The ENG and VNG Tests

Both these tests analyze how well your eyes help your sense of balance. To understand this, your specialist will ask you to watch different sequences of light on a monitor.

The room will be dark so you can focus. Following the initial phase, you’ll be instructed to move in certain ways whilst watching the bright patterns.

#3 – The Rotary Chair Test

After this, you’ll move to a mechanized chair, so your specialist can further review how your eyesight is performing.

Here, you’ll place a headset over your eyes. This will measure how they respond to different impulses.

#4 – The Posturography Test

Next, your specialist will evaluate how well you can remain balanced while upright. For this, you’ll stand on a platform, wearing a harness, as a screen depicts a changing landscape.

The platform will move slightly, and you’ll just need to remain focussed on the images in front of you for the duration.

#5 – The VEMP Test

Following this, your specialist will want to find out how your muscles are triggered by different sounds. You’ll sit in a chair with a pair of headphones over your ears.

Your specialist will then place small sensory pads on your head and face. When you hear a specific sound, you’ll be asked to react in a certain way.

# 6 – The Video Head Impulse Test

This final test will discern how your eyes adapt to sudden movement. For this, your specialist will provide you with a pair of special glasses.

As your specialist gently adjusts the position of your head, these will measure how your eyes move accordingly.

What is Vertigo?

Your equilibrium consists of an interaction between your inner ear, vision and somatosensory perception.

These three must signal in-sync to correctly align your central nervous system, in order to allow your cerebellum (the motor-control part of your brain) to maintain your center of gravity.

If any of these components aren’t performing to standard, then this has a direct impact on your balance, which can cause the feeling of dizziness and a lack of balance.

The most common reason for this is Vertigo.

Vertigo affects over 90 million Americans and over 9 million people per year consult their Doctor over complaints of dizziness, with balance-related falls accounting for more than half of all accidental deaths in the older generation.

The symptoms of Vertigo range from balance and light-headedness, to motion sickness, nausea and vomiting and severe headaches.

The good news is that some types of vertigo resolve without treatment, there may be an underlying problem that may need medical attention.
